Doing business the Marwari way

A business clan spread all over India. Especially their roots lie in the Marwar region of Rajasthan. In awe of their smartness, you have to be. Be it any part of India from Karnataka to Uttar Pradesh or from Kerala to Gujarat, they are those inevitable forces who can’t be stopped from doing business successfully anywhere.  Starting from a local grocery shop to a traditional garment shop, they claim their presence everywhere around the nook and corner of our country. The best part is they learn and speak the local languages better than the original people of that part. And most importantly, they are successful in most of their ventures.  There is one story I heard about them regarding their inventory management. One local saree shop vendor in Kolkata used to manage the demand extremely efficiently. On a daily basis, he had a target of selling 800 sarees. So after the sale of 100 sarees he used to call the distributor for 100 more. He kept doing this every hour and at the end of the day he actually managed to sell 800 sarees. This was a daily routine and he was successful at doing all that manually. Their philosophy is to rotate money in an efficient way. Even if he sells with the margin of ₹ 100, he ends up making a profit of ₹ 8000 a day.
Isn’t it astonishing he aptly managed to do it? But I will tell you that’s more of common sense. And that’s what Marwaris are very good at. Sometimes as a retailer or shopkeeper we tend to ignore our inventory issues. It’s more like whatever is going is sufficient and good enough, so why to apply our brains. Most of them keep repeating same mistakes. But you simply can’t expect that from Marwaris.
Likewise, already existing and upcoming technologies are also based on the simple concept of predicting the demand even before it arises. They have been tried and tested. So the need of the hour is to go for it rather than facing nuisances in our supply chain.
